Counterfeit Spirituality

If I’m trying to call someone and I’m only one number off, I won’t get the person I’m trying to call, no matter how many times I try and how sincere I am. In my life it has been easy to think I’m going to connect with God just because I’m being spiritual.

There’s God’s spiritual reality. And then there’s the world’s. Paul calls counterfeit spirituality The weak and useless spiritual principles of this world.

Here are a few counterfeits I’ve believed:

  1. God is angry. I can appease his anger by keeping certain rituals or obeying his laws to the T.
  2. God is a tree, a fish, a rock, or a cloud. Maybe if I’m a good person in this life, in my next life I’ll come back reincarnated as God. If not, I could come back as a frog or a rat.
  3. If I walk on a certain side of the street, I’ll get from God what I made a wish for.
  4. God has a poor memory so I need to remind him what he promised in the Bible.
  5. God is my best friend and he’s living inside me. But he’s somewhere far away, so I need to yell at him.
  6. God is distracted and overstressed. When I pray, I need to make sure I explain all the details of my situation and finish with advice on how he should handle it.
  7. God doesn’t understand English. So I speak to him in King James language, an unknown tongue, or least Pennsylvania Dutch.
  8. Because I rolled through a stop sign last week, God is angry with me. Or maybe I did something wrong that I didn’t know was wrong. He was highly offended and removed himself from me. Maybe if I beg and plead, he’ll change his mind and come back.

Just like counterfeit money, counterfeit spirituality can’t spend. Learn what true spirituality is.

Run strong and finish well today,
Phillip

Am I the Only Lonely Person I Know?

I’ve been thinking a lot about relationships. I have a God-shaped void that people cannot fill. But I also have a people-shaped void that God cannot fill. Broken, as-is, messed up people, just like me. People who eat Twinkies and pizza instead of broccoli and salad without dressing. People who get on my nerves and… Continue Reading

The True Place of Worship

Earthly places of worship are only shadows, models of true worship. True worship happens in the heart between God and me, wherever I am and whenever I feel the desire. Under the Jewish law shadows and models of worship were purchased with the blood of animals. Today in America they’re purchased with money. But Jesus… Continue Reading

Move Toward the Light

We live in a broken world filled with broken people. Where people die and betray one another and fall out over petty misunderstandings and go on diets but don’t lose weight. Where long held dreams don’t come to pass and our best plans fail. Sometimes it all piles up at once and we fall into… Continue Reading

The Dirty Numbers About Weight Gain

One evening when Gina and I attended a church supper, she noticed an overweight woman sitting at the next table eating a rich dessert. Meaning to encourage me to stay on my diet, Gina said, “She doesn’t think just that one piece of pie will make a difference. But it all adds up fast.” I… Continue Reading
